Heart rate zones are not based on 220 – age rule anymore. Thanks to people like Joe Friel we have much more precise methods for setting up training zones.

Cycling heart rate zones can be used for building your training plan, it is not necessary to have a power meter.

You can still build your training plan and improve just by using heart rate zones. The best way is to keep track of both, power and heart rate, it will allow you to build an even better training plan.

All zones are based on “FTHR”, Functional Threshold Heart Rate, you can read more about it here as well as about Functional Threshold Power.

Cycling heart rate zones are still in use, even after developing on power meters, professional athletes still pay attention to heart rate zones, especially the relation between heart rate and power.
